Homework for Block E and H (Thursday 30 November) November 30, 2006

Last classes reflection.

Today in Social Studies I was taught about the History of Western Africa. I was taught about how the Songhai Empire grew to greatness, The Kingdom of Mali under Mansa Musa, and the the conquest of Songhai by Morocco.

Here are some facts that I was taught by my peers about the conquest of Songhai:

  1. Al-Mansur (leader at the time) wanted to control the salt and gold trade so he could become rich.
  2. West Africa seperated into different states because others went to find more gold and salt.

The Kingdom of Mali:

  1. Mali remained powerful for 2 centurys.
  2. Had a loving King (Mansa Munsa) who gave away gold for nothing.

How the Songhai Empire grew to greatness:

  1. Songhai got independence from Mali in 1435.
  2. Songhai was ruled by Mali for a ong time.
  3. Askia (ruler) spread Islam to West and East Africa.
  4. Askia had a neiraly tradition.
